K-pop rookie Ahof explores 'rough youth' in new album

By Shim Sun-ah

SEOUL, Nov. 4 (Yonhap) -- Rising K-pop rookie Ahof returned Tuesday with its second album, "The Passage," just four months after its debut, embracing the theme of "rough youth" that delves into the anxiety and pain of growing up.

The nine-member boy band, formed on the SBS audition program "Universe League," confronts the turbulent transition between adolescence and adulthood in the latest EP.

"When most people think of youth, they only picture beautiful and heartwarming scenes," said member Woongki at the media showcase for the album in Seoul. "But youth isn't always beautiful. Sometimes it's difficult and painful. 'Rough youth' is about accepting that instability and finding your genuine self."

Cha added that the concept reflects the group's own journey of development. "We've captured our story of growing stronger after navigating a rough and confusing period, expressing that process in Ahof's unique way."

The new EP, which follows the band's debut EP "Who We Are" released last July, contains five tracks. The main track, "Pinocchio," features a strong band sound and uses the classic fairy tale as a motif to explore sincerity.

The band explained the track is about one's desire to be honest with the person he loves despite capriciousness, anxiety and wavering.

The rapid-fire comeback was not without its internal pressures.

Member Jeongwoo confessed to feeling anxious about meeting expectations. "There was anxiety about having to show a more grown-up side compared to our previous work," he admitted. "My confidence dropped with the thought, 'What if it's not perfect?' but the members' constant encouragement helped us push through."

Woongki also noted a shift in the group's performance style. "While our debut song, 'Rendezvous,' was characterized by a boyish charm, the choreography for 'Pinocchio' showcases tougher dance lines."

Ahof has enjoyed a swift rise to fame, including topping three local TV music charting programs, within 10 days of its debut and holding a sold-out standalone "fan concert" in the Philippines.

Reflecting on the concert, Han said, "When I stood on stage at the concert venue, it felt as if I were surrounded by a universe of twinkling stars. It was a performance I'll remember for the rest of my life."

Filipino member JL expressed his joy at performing with the group in his home country and shared his hope to continue growing as an artist.

However, the group will work as an eight-member team for the time being as Chih En has temporarily suspended activities due to health reasons.

"Unfortunately, Chih En cannot join us for this promotion," Jeongwoo confirmed, adding that the Taiwanese member is currently "focusing on recovery so he can return in good health."

"He sent us a lot of encouragement and compliments while we were preparing the album," Jeongwoo said. "We will work very hard to fill his empty spot."
