S. Korea hosts global ministerial meetings on clean energy

SEOUL, Aug. 26 (Yonhap) -- Ministerial-level officials from over 40 countries worldwide have gathered in South Korea this week for a series of meetings for discussions on ways to expand and promote the use of eco-friendly energy sources, Seoul's industry ministry said Tuesday.

The 16th Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM) meeting kicked off Monday in the country's southeastern port city of Busan, 325 kilometers from Seoul, where the 10th Mission Innovation (MI) meeting is also being held, involving government delegates from 41 nations and 111 international organizations, according to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.

The MI is a global consultative group established in 2021, aimed at promoting technology innovation related to clean energy. Both the CEM and MI meetings are set to run through Wednesday.

The two meetings are part of major international energy events being held in Busan, including the World Climate Industry Expo (WCE) and a meeting of energy ministers from the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) member economies.

At the 16th CEM meeting, South Korea hosted four roundtable discussions between energy ministers and executives from major local and global companies, the ministry said.

Companies taking part in the public-private discussions included Hyundai Motor Co., LS Cable & System Ltd. and battery maker LG Energy Solution Co., as well as Microsoft Inc., Google LLC and NVIDIA Corp.

"We hope the events held in South Korea can expand innovative energy-related technologies and provide an important turning point for countries to seek resolutions and promote unity," Lee Ho-hyeon, second vice minister of industry, trade and energy, said.
