Trump 'very surprised' Xi did not mention U.S. in Victory Day address

WASHINGTON, Sept. 3 (Yonhap) -- U.S. President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he was "very surprised" that Chinese President Xi Jinping did not mention the United States during his speech marking the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, as he has underscored America's role in achieving victory in the war.

Trump made the remarks during a press availability as he held talks with Polish President Karol Nawrocki. China held a massive military parade to mark the anniversary on Wednesday (local time), where Xi stood alongside North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and Russian President Vladimir Putin in a show of their solidarity.

"I was very surprised. I watched the speech last night. President Xi is a friend of mine," he said, sitting next to the Polish leader at the White House.

"I thought that the United States should have been mentioned last night during that speech, because we helped China very, very much," he added.

However, Trump cast the parade as a "beautiful" and "very impressive" ceremony.

"But I understood the reason they were doing it, and they were hoping I was watching, and I was watching," he said.

He also repeated his claim that he has a good relationship with Xi, Kim and Putin.

"My relationship with all of them is very good," he said. "We're going to find out how good it is over the next week or two."

In a social media post on Tuesday, Trump said that the "big" question was whether Xi would mention what Trump called the "massive amount of support and blood" that the U.S. gave to China to help the Asian country secure its freedom.

"Many Americans died in China's quest for Victory and Glory," Trump wrote on Truth Social. "I hope that they are rightfully Honored and Remembered for their Bravery and Sacrifice!"
