Lee urges stern responses to election law violations ahead of June local elections
By Kim Eun-jung
SEOUL, Feb. 24 (Yonhap) -- President Lee Jae Myung on Tuesday urged authorities to respond firmly to major election law violations, with about three months left before the June 3 local elections.
During a Cabinet meeting, Lee instructed the police, prosecution and the National Election Commission to take stern action against three major election crimes, including smear campaigns, abuse of official power in elections and vote buying, presidential spokesperson Kang Yu-jung said in a written briefing.
"It seems like enforcement has been lax toward crimes that undermine the election environment, such as the spread of false information," Lee was quoted as saying.
Lee urged relevant agencies to emphasize their strict response guidelines before the full-fledged campaign season begins, Kang added.
The upcoming elections, which include parliamentary by-elections in more than 10 constituencies, are expected to serve as the first major bellwether of public support for the Lee administration since its launch in June last year.
