U.N. special rapporteur on N.K. human rights vows efforts for engagement with Pyongyang

SEOUL -- Elizabeth Salmon, the U.N. special rapporteur on North Korean human rights, pledged Monday to continue to support initiatives of South Korea and the international community aimed at dialogue and engagement with the communist country, Seoul's foreign ministry said.

Salmon made the remarks during a meeting with South Korea's Second Vice Foreign Minister Kim Jina in Seoul, as she is in Seoul for her third official visit since becoming the fourth special rapporteur in August 2022.

Former N. Korea-detained missionary Kenneth Bae seeks radio channel broadcasting to North

SEOUL -- Kenneth Bae, a Korean American Christian missionary formerly detained in North Korea, said Wednesday he seeks to open a radio channel broadcasting to the North in cooperation with civic and religious groups in the South.

Bae's nonprofit organization, New Korea Foundation International, and 45 other civic and religious groups announced the plan to open the radio channel, "Korea Link," as they launched a joint association and began collecting donations for the project.

Senior Seoul official anticipates 'new progress in a few days' regarding N. Korea issue

WASHINGTON -- A senior South Korean official said Thursday that he anticipates "some new progress in a few days" regarding North Korea-related issues, but he noted it is not about the resumption of dialogue between Washington and Pyongyang.

The official made the remarks during a meeting with reporters in Washington amid speculation that U.S. President Donald Trump could seek a meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un when he visits China in April.
