U.S. Marines stage live-fire drills near border with N. Korea

SEOUL, March 26 (Yonhap) -- U.S. Marines based in Okinawa, Japan, have staged combined live-fire exercises at a firing range near the inter-Korean border aimed at enhancing combat effectiveness, the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command said Thursday.

The 12th Marine Littoral Regiment of the 3rd Marine Division executed the live-fire drills at the Rodriguez Live Fire Complex in Pocheon, some 40 kilometers north of Seoul, according to a release uploaded to the command's website.

The drills, which ran from Feb. 26 to March 4, involved U.S. Marines integrating maneuver elements and reconnaissance capabilities to conduct a coordinated assault on a designated objective.

The company-level exercise strengthened the unit's ability to "synchronize fires and movement in a dynamic training environment while enhancing combat effectiveness," it said.

The live-firing drill came as U.S. Marines in Japan came to South Korea to participate in an annual joint military exercise with South Korean Marines, dubbed the Korean Marine Exercise Program, earlier this month.
