Re-enactment of Confucian scholar's return to hometown

People wearing traditional men's outfits, called "dopo" in Korean, and "gat," traditional Korean hats, leave Gyeongbok Palace in Seoul on March 30, 2026, as they reenact the last return to the hometown of Andong by Yi Hwang (1501–1570), one of the most prominent Korean Confucian scholars in the 1392-1910 Joseon Dynasty. They are taking part in the two-week, 270-kilometer pilgrimage starting from the palace to Dosan Seowon, a Confucian academy from the dynasty, in Andong, North Gyeongsang Province, southeastern South Korea. After pleading several times with King Seonjo to let him resign from office, Yi, also known by his pen name Toegye, returned to the southeastern town in 1569 and died the next year. (Yonhap)
