CHANGNYEONG, June 9 (Yonhap) -- Two of the
three naturally hatched crested ibises, an endangered bird in Korea, succeeded
in their first flight earlier this year, Changnyeong county announced on
Wednesday.
The two crested ibis chicks, which were born at the end of April, succeeded in
flapping their wings and flying in the sky at 5:30 a.m. this morning. It has
been around 45 days since the two chicks have hatched.
The first flight period has been observed to be similar to that of a cage grown Crested ibis.
The officials from Changnyeong county explained that the two chicks flew at the
same time.
The flight took about one minute and the birds traveled about 200 meters from
the nest to a nearby village.
In order to closely monitor the crested ibis chicks, the county recently
installed location trackers and rings with numbers and letters.
This year, the third crested ibis chick died before it could spread its wings
due to an attack made by an eagle owl.
