Lee congratulates women's short track relay team on winning gold medal

SEOUL, Feb. 19 (Yonhap) -- President Lee Jae Myung on Thursday congratulated the women's short track speed skating team for winning a gold medal in the 3,000-meter relay at the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics.

"I extend my deepest congratulations to the national team for winning a proud gold medal," Lee wrote on Facebook after the team clinched South Korea's second gold medal Wednesday (local time), calling it proof that South Korea's reputation as a "short track powerhouse" is "no exaggeration."

Lee also praised the team of Choi Min-jeong, Kim Gil-li, Noh Do-hee and Shim Suk-hee, saying their individual skills, combined with the teamwork built over the years, have proudly demonstrated South Korea's competitiveness to the world.

He noted that the victory marked South Korea's seventh gold medal in the women's relay event since the event was introduced at the Olympics. It was also the country's first short track gold medal of the Winter Games in Milan.

"Choi, in particular, secured her sixth Olympic medal through this competition, joining the ranks of South Korea's most decorated Olympians," Lee said.
