Prosecutors seek arrest warrant for shaman on charges of illegally accepting political funds

SEOUL, Dec. 18 (Yonhap) -- Prosecutors on Wednesday filed for an arrest warrant for a shaman allegedly involved in President Yoon Suk Yeol's 2022 presidential campaign on charges of receiving illegal political funds, officials said.

On Tuesday, prosecutors from the Seoul Southern District Prosecutors Office detained Jeon Seong-bae, also known as Geon Jin, on suspicions of receiving illegal political funds from politicians and candidates who ran for office in the 2018 local elections.

During questioning, Jeon reportedly told prosecutors he returned the funds that he received.

A court will hold a hearing Thursday on whether to issue the warrant for Jeon's formal arrest.

Prosecutors raided Jeon's home and a temple in southern Seoul on Tuesday to search for evidence and have also seized his phone.

Prosecutors have found unusual financial activity in connection to Jeon as they investigated a scam into a cryptocurrency called Queenbee. They are looking into whether Jeon laundered the funds he received using cryptocurrency.

Jeon is believed to have been involved in Yoon's presidential campaign before his election in March 2022, and has been accused of flaunting his personal ties to Yoon and his wife, Kim Keon Hee.

He also reportedly served as an adviser at first lady Kim's former company, Covana Contents.
