Lee to visit Marine Corps unit this week to mark Korean War anniversary

SEOUL, June 23 (Yonhap) -- President Lee Jae Myung plans to visit a Marine Corps unit this week to mark the anniversary of the outbreak of the Korean War (1950-53), his office said Tuesday.

The announcement came as South Korea will on Thursday commemorate the 76th anniversary of the start of the war, which left hundreds of thousands of Korean and foreign soldiers killed and the Korean Peninsula divided into the capitalist South and the socialist North.

The war ended in 1953 with the signing of an armistice, leaving the peninsula technically at war for the nearly eight decades up to this day.

On Wednesday, Lee plans to visit a Marine Corps unit and inspect an area related to national security, followed by a banquet the next day with Korean War veterans and their families to commemorate those who died in the war, according to the presidential office.

On Friday, the president plans to preside over a meeting to discuss strategies to nurture future-oriented national security firms as part of broader efforts to honor patriots and strengthen national defense capabilities, the office said.
