Samsung family to attend U.S. event marking late chairman's art collection

SEOUL, Jan. 16 (Yonhap) -- Members of the Samsung founding family are set to attend an event in Washington this month marking a successful overseas exhibition of a collection of art collected by late Samsung Group Chairman Lee Kun-hee, industry sources said Friday.

Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong, the late tycoon's only son, and his mother, Hong Ra-hee, honorary director of the Leeum Museum, plan to visit Washington for the celebration as the collection is on display at the Smithsonian National Museum of Asian Art, according to the sources.

The late chairman's two daughters, Lee Boo-jin, chief executive officer of Hotel Shilla Co., and Lee Seo-hyun, president of Samsung C&T Corp.'s fashion division, will also attend the event that will be held on Jan. 28, the sources added.

In 2021, Lee's family donated around 23,000 pieces of art to the South Korean government. Lee died in October 2020.

The museum has been running the "Korean Treasures: Collected, Cherished, Shared" exhibition featuring around 330 pieces from the collection since November, which is set to run through Feb. 1.

The collection will continue to be displayed at the Art Institute of Chicago from March to July, and at the British Museum in London from September to January 2027.
