SEOUL, Sept. 9 (Yonhap) -- The government will raise the terror alert starting later this week in the run-up to the inaugural summit between South Korea and five Central Asian nations set for next week, officials said Wednesday.

The terror alert will be raised to the second-lowest level of "caution" on the four-tier scale for the whole country starting Friday and to the second-highest level of "alert" for Seoul starting Sunday, three days before the First Korea-Central Asia Summit kicks off Wednesday for a three-day run.

Under the heightened alert, immigration checks and police patrols will be strengthened, officials said.

Five Central Asian countries taking part in next week's summit are Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan.
