SEOUL, Sept. 30 (Yonhap) -- The main opposition People Power Party (PPP) on Wednesday cut to one year the party membership suspension imposed on a lawmaker involved in a scuffle with the party whip, effectively clearing the way for him to seek the party's nomination in the April 2028 general elections.

Rep. Kwon Young-jin was initially handed an 18-month suspension by the committee last month, which would have prevented him from running on the PPP ticket in the parliamentary elections.

The PPP ethics committee announced that it decided to impose a one-year suspension instead after the lawmaker requested a review of the disciplinary action.

Kwon is accused of grabbing PPP floor leader Jeong Jeom-sig by the collar while protesting parliamentary committee assignments in July.

Shortly after the announcement, Kwon said in a Facebook post that he accepted the committee's decision and apologized for causing public concern.
