S. Korean, Canadian naval bands stage joint performance in Victoria

SEOUL, May 27 (Yonhap) -- The South Korean and Canadian naval bands conducted a joint performance Wednesday in a bid to enhance the partnership between the navies, officials said, following the arrival of a South Korean submarine at a port in Victoria.

The two naval bands held a joint performance at the Royal Theater in Victoria, Canada, as part of efforts to commemorate the sacrifices of Canadian troops who fought in the 1950-53 Korean War, according to South Korea's Navy.

The 3,000-ton ROKS Dosan Ahn Chang-ho entered a port at the Canadian naval base in Esquimalt, Victoria, on Saturday (local time), in what marks the first trans-Pacific voyage ever undertaken by a South Korean submarine.

The South Korean naval band performed K-pop medleys and musical pieces featuring traditional Korean instruments in a joint performance with the Canadian counterpart.

The event brought together some 1,200 people, including Rear Adm. Lee Jong-ee, South Korean Navy chief of policy, and Rear Adm. David Patchell, commander of Maritime Forces Pacific, along with the Korean War veterans and their family members.

South Korea is seeking to win a massive Canadian submarine deal, where its consortium of Hanwha Ocean Co. and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. is vying against Germany's Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems to supply up to 12 conventionally powered submarines to Ottawa.
