Seoul city to supply 2,500 additional late-night cabs for year-end

SEOUL, Nov. 29 (Yonhap) -- The Seoul city government said Wednesday it will expand the operation of late-night taxis and buses through the end of the year as demand is expected to surge due to year-end gatherings.

The city government plans to supply 2,500 additional late-night cabs and install temporary taxi stops in 12 locations starting Friday, including in Gangnam and Seoul Station, to match passengers with taxis on a one-on-one basis.

The taxi industry and the ride-hailing platforms, including Kakao T and Tada, will pay incentives and promote the late-night operation to taxi drivers to secure supply, officials said.

The city will also deploy personnel to clamp down on taxis that refuse to accept passengers or put up a false occupied sign in areas subject to major complaints from passengers from Dec. 4 through Jan. 5.

In addition, buses on 87 routes that pass through crowded downtown areas will extend the operation to 1 a.m. starting Dec. 15 until the year-end, and two more buses will be deployed on all 14 routes for night buses, which operate from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m.
