Sacred winemaking for Gangneung Dano Festival

Ritual operators, who have slips of paper in their mouths as protection against bad luck, engage in brewing "sinju," or sacred wine, which will be used for traditional rites of the Gangneung Dano Festival, at the former government office Chilsadang in Gangneung, Gangwon Province, northeastern South Korea, on May 2, 2025. The libation making is the start of the festival, a UNESCO intangible cultural asset, during which participants pray for favorable weather for farming, fishing and a good harvest. (Yonhap)
