Presidential office pushes for Yoon-Trump meeting during trip to South America

SEOUL, Nov. 12 (Yonhap) -- President Yoon Suk Yeol's office has been in communication with aides of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump to arrange a meeting during Yoon's upcoming trip to South America, a senior presidential official said Tuesday.

Yoon is scheduled to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Peru and participate in Group of 20 summits in Brazil from Nov. 14-21.

When asked if Yoon might meet with Trump en route to the trips, a senior official said Yoon's office has been in contact with Trump's aides, though no decisions have been made.

"(We) have indeed been in close communication with Trump's team," the official told reporters.

Yoon said he and Trump agreed to meet at an early date during their phone call last week.

South Korean officials and lawmakers are increasing their outreach to Trump's inner circle, anticipating potential shifts in trade policies and increased demands for South Korea's financial contribution to U.S. troops in the country.
