SEOUL, Aug. 24 (Yonhap) -- Ruling Democratic Party (DP) leader Kim Min-seok met with his main opposition People Power Party (PPP) counterpart Monday, vowing to step up communication between the two parties on pending issues.

The meeting with PPP leader Jang Dong-hyeok at the National Assembly marked their first talks since Kim took office last week.

"As long as politics continues, if there are two people who should not let go of the thread of dialogue, I believe it must be Rep. Jang and myself," Kim said at the meeting. "I believe we should build a bridge of continuous dialogue."

Kim added that the two leaders should "go beyond" holding regular talks and communicate whenever necessary.

Jang echoed the sentiment, expressing appreciation for Kim's commitment to maintaining communication with the PPP.

He then brought up the recent controversy surrounding Supreme Court Chief Justice Cho Hee-dae's decision to recommend two new Supreme Court justice nominees to the president in writing, a move that drew strong criticism from DP lawmakers as such recommendations have usually been made in person after prior coordination.

"There may have been procedural issues, but what is more important is the rule of law of the Republic of Korea," Jang said.

The two sides also exchanged their views on the government's real estate policies.

Jang pointed out that the government's housing policies run counter to President Lee Jae Myung's campaign pledges, saying such reversals in the president's policy direction can cause "unforeseeable losses to the public."

The DP leader said his party will seek ways to address market failures while respecting market principles as much as possible, rather than relying on tax policies.
