KRX chief heads to U.S. for WFE board meeting

SEOUL, Jan. 26 (Yonhap) -- The chairman of the Korea Exchange (KRX), South Korea's main bourse operator, has departed for Washington, D.C., to attend a high-level meeting of the World Federation of Exchanges (WFE), the bourse operator said Monday.

KRX Chairman Jeong Eun-bo is set to attend the WFE board meeting Monday (local time), where he is expected to discuss pending issues, including the introduction of a 24-hour trading system, the KRX said in a press release.

Founded in 1961, the WFE is a global industry group for exchanges and clearing houses around the world.

Following his visit to Washington, Jeong will travel to New York to attend a roadshow to be jointly hosted by the KRX and Goldman Sachs Group Inc., a global investment bank.

Jeong plans to introduce the government and the KRX's efforts to boost South Korea's stock market and strengthen investor confidence in the Korean capital market, according to the KRX. Representatives from some 20 financial institutions are set to attend the event.

Jeong's trip to the U.S. comes after the country's benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) briefly topped the anticipated 5,000 mark Thursday, boosted by a chip rally and the government's market reform measures.
