8th Army's new deputy commanding officer for S. Korea takes office

SEOUL, Feb. 27 (Yonhap) -- Col. Lee Sang-hun has assumed duties as South Korea's deputy commanding officer of the Eighth Army, the U.S. Army stationed in the South said Friday.

Lee assumed the post Wednesday, succeeding his predecessor Brig. Gen. Lee Sang-min, according to the Eighth Army.

Lee has extensive experience working alongside U.S. forces and has held a variety of command and staff positions, including as battalion commander of the 122nd Mechanized Infantry Battalion and regiment commander of the Professional Opposing Force Regiment at the Korea Combat Training Center.

His appointment sends a "clear message of unwavering commitment from both nations to stand together," it said, adding integrating experienced leaders like Lee into the command structure is a "deliberate step" to modernize the force.
