SEOUL, July 1 (Yonhap) -- An underwater excavation will be resumed in the Myeongnyang Strait, where more than 1,100 artifacts have been found during seven investigations since 2012.

On the 1st (KST), the National Research Institute of Maritime Cultural Heritage said that it will hold a ceremony wishing for safety in the waters of Myeongnyang Daecheop-ro, Jindo, Jeollanam-do Province, and conduct the eighth excavation survey until October.

Myeongnyang Strait is a route connecting the South Sea and the West Sea where many ships have come and gone for a long time, but there were many shipwreck accidents as well due to the rapid tides.

The excavation site was about four kilometers southeast of Uldolmok, the site of the Myeongnyang Battle, where Admiral Yi Sun-sin defeated the Japanese in 1597. This is where the Naval Battle of Byeokpajin, an outpost of Myeongnyang Battle, took place.

“The Myeongnyang Strait needs a thorough and long investigation due to a wide range of artifacts scattered all over the area,” said an official at the National Research Institute of Maritime Cultural Heritage. “This upcoming investigation will inspect to see if the objects found last year are considered artifacts.”
