SEOUL, July 2 (Yonhap) -- A number of storage pits have been excavated that show the pits were military sites at Cheoinseong Fortress, the site of the Great Mong Uprising during the Goryeo Dynasty, according to Yongin City in Gyeonggi Province.

Cheoinseong Fortress in Agok-ri, Namsa-myeon, Cheoin-gu, Yongin-si is a historic site where Kim Yun-hu, a Buddhist monk-general, killed Salita when Salita invaded in 1232 (the 19th year of King Gojong's reign).

Inside the fortress, the first excavation survey conducted at 1,337 square meters from March to June revealed the storage pits to be buildings and warehouse areas for military supplies.

Kim Gil-sik, a professor at Yongin University who participated as an advisor in the excavation investigation, said, "Given that there were building sites and storage pits, it can be assumed that the Cheoinseong Fortress served as a military warehouse and had separately stocked military supplies in the country before the Goryeo Dynasty."

Since 1999, three trial excavation surveys have been conducted in Cheoinseong. In the third trial excavation survey conducted between last March and May, the roof-end tile, pottery, pleated bottles and dwelling sites were excavated.

Yongin City plans to conduct additional excavation surveys to further clarify the structure and nature of the fortress.
