Lee says large-scale investment needed to secure 'overwhelming' chip supply capability

SEOUL, June 29 (Yonhap) -- President Lee Jae Myung said Monday South Korea stands at a crossroad for a great leap forward in the increasingly competitive semiconductor and artificial intelligence (AI) markets, stressing the need for large-scale investments to secure "overwhelming" chip supply capabilities.

The president made the remarks as he announced the so-called tripolar mega projects aimed at securing what he has called "absolute competitiveness" in advanced technologies and turning South Korea into an industrial powerhouse in the emerging AI era.

The projects involve large-scale investment commitments by chip giants, including Samsung Electronics Co. and SK Group, the parent group of SK hynix Inc., in three main areas: semiconductor, physical AI and AI data centers.
