The calligraphy work that Korean independence fighter Ahn Jung-geun wrote prior to his execution by Japan, which has been repatriated from Japan, is revealed during a media showcase, hosted by the state-run Korea Heritage Service, at Deoksu Palace in Seoul on Aug. 13, 2026. The calligraphic writing has eight Chinese characters, reading "International law is not equal to a single cannon," or "International law is useless compared with military force," and reflects the harsh political realism Korea had faced in the age of imperialism. The independence fighter during Japanese colonial rule of Korea was executed at a prison in China by Japanese authorities after being arrested in 1909 for assassinating Ito Hirobumi, the Japanese resident-general in Korea, at a railway station in Harbin, a city in China's Heilongjiang province.
