SeMA-new museum
SeMA opens 7th branch, bringing media art to Seoul's southwest
By Woo Jae-yeon
SEOUL, March 12 (Yonhap) -- The Seoul Museum of Art (SeMA) on Thursday opened Seo-Seoul Museum of Art (Seo SeMA), a new branch dedicated to new media art and the first public art museum in the city's southwestern area.
To commemorate the opening, the museum, SeMA's seventh branch in the city, launched two exhibitions -- "Breathing," a special performance exhibition, and "Mneme Topos," chronicling the museum's founding.
"Breathing" features works by 27 performance-based contemporary artists and groups, exploring the relationship between humans and their environments through air and its organic movement. "Mneme Topos," a documentary exhibition, traces the process behind Seo SeMA's establishment and construction and its connections with the surrounding area and its residents.
The museum aims to serve as an exploration venue for media art that bridges art, society and technology. It offers participatory programs spanning performance, sound and media art, where visitors can expand their creative thinking and deepen their understanding of the medium.
The three-story building, which includes two underground floors, sits on 7,186 square meters of land in Doksan-dong, Geumcheon Ward. From its inception in 2015, the project took a decade to complete.
The single-level layout is designed with accessibility in mind -- its entrance sits level with Geumnarae Park, inviting people to come and go with ease.
True to its vision of being a museum for everyone, Seo SeMA presents itself not as an imposing institution but as an extension of the street, a place where people can stroll in as naturally as they would a park, according to the museum.
"Breathing" opens until April 12. "Mneme Topos" runs through April 26 and resumes from April 28 to July 12.
