State medal for late U.S. Gen. MacArthur
Maj. Gen. Lee Kyung-koo (L), South Korea's defense attache to the United States, presents the Taegeuk Order of Military Merit for late Gen. Douglas MacArthur to Norfolk Mayor Kenneth Alexander during a ceremony at the MacArthur Memorial in Norfolk, Virginia, on Jan. 26, 2024, in this photo provided by the defense ministry. The belated delivery of the state medal came 74 years after the 1950-53 Korean War. MacArthur, the first commander of the U.N. Command, had received a certificate for the First Class Order of Military Merit in 1950, by then South Korean President Rhee Syng-man, after South Korean and U.S.-led U.N. troops recaptured Seoul from North Korean forces. But the medal was never delivered, a fact that was only recently discovered after being tipped off by a citizen. (PHOTO NOT FOR SALE) (Yonhap)
