SeMA puts architecture on key exhibition agenda this year

SEOUL, Feb. 6 (Yonhap) -- The Seoul Museum of Art (SeMA) said Tuesday it will present a series of architecture exhibitions this year, touching upon a wide variety of topics related to architecture beyond its primary purpose as a dwelling and working space.

In April, the SeMA is set to hold a major exhibition on the acclaimed British architect and designer Norman Foster, jointly with Foster + Partners, a global architecture studio founded by the architect in 1967.

The exhibition will focus on the architect's works for public institutions and museums, in particular, the SeMA said, highlighting his philosophy on eco-friendly and open-plan spaces from the 1960s.

The winner of the Pritzker Prize in 1999, Foster is not a stranger to Korea's architecture scene. His company designed the new corporate building of Hankook Tire & Technology in Pangyo, on the outskirts of Seoul. The 10-story building opened in 2020, with a focus on sustainability.

The exhibition will come as the city's public art museum is currently remodeling its main Seosomun building. It is also adding two new branches, including a photography museum set to open late this year. The construction of yet another museum in the western part of the city is expected to be completed within next year.

Alongside the Foster exhibition, two more exhibitions on architecture will open at the main Seosomun branch and Nam-Seoul branch in April.
