S. Korea to seek arms industry cooperation with Commonwealth nations

SEOUL, April 24 (Yonhap) -- The chief of the state arms procurement agency on Friday pledged to advance arms industry cooperation with British Commonwealth nations, underscoring the courage of Commonwealth troops that fought alongside South Korean soldiers during the 1950-53 Korean War.

Defense Acquisition Program Administration Minister Lee Yong-cheol made the call as he attended a ceremony marking the 75th anniversary of a key Korean War battle in the northern county of Gapyeong, also attended by the Army chiefs and ambassadors of Britain, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

"(We) will remember the noble sacrifice and dedication of the veterans who came to defend liberal democracy and continue to bolster ties with sending states in defense and security," Lee was quoted as saying.

Some 2,000 troops of the 27th Commonwealth Brigade engaged in three days of fierce combat against Chinese forces in April 1951 at the height of the three-year war, giving South Korean and U.N. forces time to secure their defense positions.
