SEOUL, May 5 (Yonhap) -- A remake of the Korean film "On Your Wedding Day" in China has set a new box office record for the Labor Day holiday.

 

According to the Chinese movie box office data app "Dengta (燈塔)," "On Your Wedding Day" recorded 600 million yuan as of this morning, beating the remake version of "Veteran" released in 2019, which earned 380 million yuan in total.

 

As of noon, the film had a cumulative box office income of 620 million yuan, topping the list of box office hits during the Labor Day holiday.

 

In second place was the movie "Cliff Walkers" directed by Zhang Yi-mou.

 

"On Your Wedding Day" topped the list of scheduled releases at the same time, as well as ranked eighth in the history of the Chinese movie reservation and information website Mao Yan.

 

The pre-booking revenue alone exceeded 50 million yuan (about 8.6 billion won).

 

Recently, actor Greg Hsu and actress Ruonan Zhang, who are popular in China, starred in the roles of Kim Young-kwang and Park Bo-young, respectively.

 

The movie tells the story of the first love felt between the male and female characters, who became an official couple in high school, but broke up and met again by fate. However, the two failed to get married, which is almost similar to the original Korean movie.

 

"It seems to reflect the Chinese people's good evaluation of the original film and the tendency to find a topic that is not heavy amid the flood of political films," said an official working at the Chinese office within the Korean Film Council. "The release ahead of Labor Day also affected the box office."

 

Since the relations between Korea and China deteriorated, only remakes of Korean films have been made in China, while the release of Korean films or joint productions of Korean-Chinese films are suspended.
