SEOUL, Oct. 14 (Yonhap) -- Veterans Minister Kwon Oh-eul will meet with officials from the country's major business groups to discuss benefits for discharged service members, officials said Wednesday.
Kwon is scheduled to meet with Ryu Jin, chairman of the Federation of Korean Industries, later in the day and request cooperation in expanding the recognition of military service in the private sector.
Under a revised law, all public institutions are required to take military service into account when determining pay grades and salaries starting in February next year.
The government has sought to expand compensation for discharged service members by encouraging private firms to apply such a standard.
Currently, only 37.8 percent of companies recognize military duty, according to the ministry.
The veterans minister plans to meet with the remaining business groups -- the Korean Employers Federation, the Korean Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Korea International Trade Association and the Korea Federation of SMEs -- in the future.
