SEOUL, Sept. 23 (Yonhap) -- The top diplomats of South Korea and the Republic of the Congo have met in New York and discussed ways to expand cooperation in energy and other economic areas, the foreign ministry said Wednesday.

Foreign Minister Cho Hyun held talks with Congolese Foreign Minister Constant Serge Bounda on the sidelines of the high-level segment of the 81st U.N. General Assembly on Tuesday (local time), according to the ministry.

The two ministers noted strong potential for expanding economic cooperation, particularly given the complementary nature of bilateral trade in energy and other areas, and agreed to further strengthen ties across a range of fields.

They also discussed development cooperation, the protection of their respective nationals abroad and cooperation in international forums, the ministry said.
