SEOUL, Aug. 24 (Yonhap) -- President Lee Jae Myung on Monday stressed that law is a universal principle that should be upheld unwaveringly amid rapid social changes caused by technological advances.

The president made the remarks in a message to a Seoul conference of the Korean Bar Association, which was read on his behalf by Han Chan-sik, presidential secretary for civil affairs.

"(We) are in an era of upheaval where artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technologies are advancing rapidly, while social structures are undergoing sweeping changes," the president said, adding that such changes are leading to a rise in conflicts and disputes that the current system and order alone cannot address.

"At times like this, law should provide the direction to follow and fulfill its function and responsibilities as a universal principle that must be upheld unwaveringly," Lee added.

The president stressed the important role of the bar association in ensuring the rule of law and safeguarding people's basic rights, requesting the association to do its utmost to help people gain access to fair legal services.
