Over 1.6 tln won in unclaimed financial assets recovered in 2025: data

SEOUL, Feb. 11 (Yonhap) -- Some 1.63 trillion won (US$1.12 billion) worth of unclaimed financial assets were recovered last year, the financial watchdog said Wednesday.

Unclaimed financial assets are money held by financial institutions that have been dormant without transaction records by customers for a significant period.

According to the Financial Supervisory Service (FSS), customers reclaimed dormant credit card points worth 630 billion won, along with 404 billion won worth of stocks and other securities, and 339 billion won in deposits.

Unclaimed financial assets, which also include unclaimed insurance benefits, have continued to rise over the past few years despite a series of campaigns to promote recovery.

Data showed that such financial assets were tallied at 18.4 trillion won as of the end of June last year, up from 15.9 trillion won at end-2021 and 18 trillion won at the end of 2023.

In 2023, 2 trillion won worth of unclaimed financial assets were recovered, up from 1.5 trillion won in 2022 and 1.4 trillion won in 2019.
