Lee's approval rating rises to 65 pct: poll

SEOUL, March 6 (Yonhap) -- President Lee Jae Myung's approval rating climbed back to a previous high of 65 percent, led by positive assessments of his economic and housing policies, a poll showed Friday.

The survey by Gallup Korea, conducted Tuesday through Thursday on 1,001 respondents aged 18 and over, showed that the positive assessment of Lee's overall performance gained 1 percentage point from the previous week.

The negative assessment fell 1 percentage point to 25 percent.

Lee's economic policies were cited most frequently as the reason for the positive evaluation at 18 percent, followed by housing policies at 16 percent and diplomacy at 11 percent.

In recent months, Lee has been seeking to rein in home prices through various measures, such as ending an exemption from the heavy capital gains tax for owners of multiple homes in May.

The approval rating for the ruling Democratic Party rose 3 percentage points to 46 percent, reaching its previous high since Lee took office.

Support for the main opposition People Power Party (PPP) fell 1 percentage point to 21 percent.

On the upcoming June 3 local elections, 46 percent replied that candidates from the DP should win many seats, while 30 percent expressed support for opposition candidates.

When asked about their preferred future political leaders, Cho Kuk, leader of the minor Rebuilding Korea Party, came in first with 9 percent.

Prime Minister Kim Min-seok, former PPP leader Han Dong-hoon and current leader Jang Dong-hyeok came next with 4 percent.

The survey had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points at a 95 percent confidence level.
