SEOUL, May 31 (Yonhap) -- Singer-songwriter Olivia Rodrigo (18), who is referred to as the "monster rookie" in the pop industry, topped the "Billboard 200" albums chart with her debut album "Sour."
Rodrigo's first studio album "Sour" topped the Billboard 200 this week, according to Billboard on Sunday (KST).
According to MRC data quoted by Billboard, "Sour," which was released on May 21, sold 295,000 worth of album copies in a week, recording the highest sales among all the albums released this year.
Billboard combines traditional album sales with the number of streaming and digital music downloads, respectively, to rank the most popular albums of the week.
In the case of Rodrigo's album, the number of streaming equivalent albums (SEA) was 218,000, accounting the majority percentage of the total sales.
Rodrigo quickly became the next pop star after releasing her debut song "Drivers License," which the singer wrote based on her experience last year, and topped the Billboard main single chart "Hot 100" for eight weeks.
The album "Sour" also contains songs inspired by Rodrigo's love history and heartfelt lyrics, drawing enthusiastic response from Gen Z audiences.
The song "Good 4 U," which was released as the lead single earlier, topped the "Hot 100" as soon as it was released, as well as the UK Singles Chart, which is considered one of the world's top two pop charts along with Billboard.
As a result, group BTS, which has returned with its new song "Butter," is expected to compete with Rodrigo for the No. 1 spot on "Hot 100" this week.
A number of Billboard ranking prediction sites analyzed that BTS' "Butter" and Rodrigo's "Good 4 U" would rank first and second on the chart, respectively, after a close competition. .
