Disciplinary committee meeting set for 6 military officers over martial law involvement

SEOUL, Jan. 23 (Yonhap) -- The defense ministry was set to decide Friday on the level of disciplinary measures against six military officers involved in former President Yoon Suk Yeol's failed martial law bid in late 2024, officials said.

The ministry plans to hold a disciplinary committee meeting later in the day against the six officers, who are currently standing trial on charge of playing a key role in insurrection related to Yoon's Dec. 3 martial law declaration in 2024.

Among them, Brig. Gen. Lee Sang-hyun and Col. Kim Hyun-tae are accused of leading troops to storm into the National Assembly to prevent lawmakers from voting down the martial law decree.

Brig. Gen. Kim Dae-woo is suspected of allegedly dispatching an arrest team to detain politicians during the martial law debacle. Three other officials from the Defense Intelligence Command are accused of attempting to take over the National Assembly and arrest its employees.

The move comes as the military has been ramping up efforts to rebuild the military in the aftermath of the marital law bid, which led to the suspension of high-level officers across the military.
