military-inspection visit
S. Korea's top military officer inspects military readiness at front-line unit
SEOUL, May 21 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's top military officer visited a unit near the border with North Korea on Tuesday, and called for heightened monitoring and analysis of North Korean border activity, his office said.
Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) Chairman Adm. Kim Myung-soo made the remark as he visited the border unit and ordered powerful retaliation in the event of the North's provocation.
Kim also visited the border county of Cheorwon in Gangwon Province, where he encouraged soldiers conducting an operation to remove landmines for the safety of residents, according to the JCS.
On Friday, North Korea fired what it claimed to be a tactical ballistic missile with new guidance technology. The JCS said the suspected short-range missiles flew about 300 kilometers before landing in the East Sea.
