Lee Yong-soo (L), a 98-year-old victim of Japan's wartime sexual slavery, and Gender Equality Minister Won Min-kyong offer a silent prayer as they attend a ceremony at the Kim Koo Museum and Library in Seoul on Aug. 14, 2026, to mark the International Memorial Day for Comfort Women. In 2018, South Korea established the memorial day to remember victims of sex crimes committed by Japan during World War II. The event came one day ahead of the 81st anniversary of Korea's liberation from Japan's colonial rule. (Yonhap)
