NK leader's sister says photo comes from foreign media, not S. Korean military
SEOUL, Oct. 18 (Yonhap) -- The powerful sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un on Friday dismissed South Korea's claim that North Korea's state media may have used a South Korean photo showing North Korea's demolition of parts of inter-Korean roads.
On Thursday, North Korea's state media released photos of railways and roads -- once considered key symbols of inter-Korean reconciliation -- being destroyed. One of the images appeared similar to footage previously shared by South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS).
"I would like to inform those idiots of the fact that the photo is a screenshot from one of the video clips released by NBC, Fox News, Reuters and other foreign media," Kim Yo-jong, vice department director at the ruling Workers' Party, said in a statement carried out by the Korean Central News Agency.
Footage or photos used by NBC, Fox News and Reuters had been sourced from the JCS.
The JCS speculated that North Korea might have used the South Korean footage without permission, suggesting that North Korea might have struggled to take similar photos in the area or encountered errors in its own attempts to capture the detonation.
"We cannot take a photo at that angle. So we used that photo, finding that it met our intention, being visually good and excellent in composition. Is it problematic?" Kim said.
She also pointed out that South Korean media outlets used the images and video clips released by North Korea in their own news reports.
