39th anniv. of 1987 democratization movement
Lily flowers and a cap from a mourner are placed at the tomb for Lee Han-yeol, a student activist from Seoul's Yonsei University, at a cemetery in the southwestern city of Gwangju on June 10, 2026, the 39th anniversary of the June 10, 1987, democratization movement that led to the country's introduction of the direct presidential election system. Lee fell into a coma after being hit by a tear gas canister hurled by riot police during a pro-democracy street protest in Seoul on June 9, 1987. He died about a month later, triggering a series of violent anti-government street demonstrations across the country that forced the government to introduce a direct presidential election system.
