Independence activist's remains to return home
Nam Koong-sun, a director at the patriots and veterans affairs ministry, gives a briefing on the return of the remains of the late Korean independence activist Hwang Ki-hwan from the United States after 100 years at the ministry in Sejong, 112 kilometers south of Seoul, on Feb. 1, 2023. The remains are currently buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery in New York. Hwang, a Korean-born American soldier who served as a diplomat in Paris and London from 1919 to 1921, worked toward Korea's independence from Japanese colonial rule (1910-45). The remains of Hwang, who died of a heart attack in New York in 1923, are slated for return in April. Hwang inspired the hit South Korean TV series "Mr. Sunshine" (2018).
