Independence fighter's remains return home
The remains of the late Korean independence fighter Hwang Ki-hwan arrive at Incheon International Airport, west of Seoul, on April 10, 2023, returning home 100 years after he died in New York in 1923. His remains, which had been buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery in New York, will be laid to rest at the National Cemetery in Daejeon, 140 kilometers south of Seoul. Hwang, a Korean-born American soldier who served as a diplomat in Paris and London from 1919 to 1921, worked toward Korea's independence from Japanese colonial rule (1910-45). Hwang inspired the hit South Korean TV series "Mr. Sunshine" (2018). (Pool photo) (Yonhap)
