Gov't launches 2045 Strategy Committee to draw up future blueprint

SEOUL, May 27 (Yonhap) -- The government held an inaugural meeting Wednesday of a committee charged with drawing up a blueprint for what South Korea should look like in 2045, kicking off a process to put together strategies to tackle a complex series of challenges the country faces to shape a better future.

The 2045 Strategy Committee is aimed at developing long-term national development strategies to muster up national capabilities so as to deal systematically with hard-to-resolve challenges, such as polarization, demographic changes, regional extinction and climate change.

"Over the past 80 years, we've transformed into an advanced nation and a democracy that the world marvels at after overcoming national division, war and dictatorships. But lying before us are such structural and complex problems as low birth rates, aging, climate change, competition for technological supremacy, and polarization," Prime Minister Kim Min-seok said during the meeting.

"In order to overcome these challenges, we have to fundamentally redesign the direction the country goes," he said. "Beyond simply improving economic indexes, we should draw up the shape of a decent, advanced and cultural nation that leads the world based on mid and long-term plans and consistent strategies."

The 2045 committee should present a blueprint for a future South Korea and put together strategies to realize it by comprehensively collecting various opinions from all circles, especially young generations who will play main roles in future society, Kim said.

"The 2045 strategy will serve as a helmsman guiding the Republic of Korea for the next 20 years," Kim said. "We have to come up with specific implementation plans so that the strategy won't end up only rhetoric."
