Army chief discusses military ties with visiting Polish delegation

SEOUL, April 1 (Yonhap) -- The chief of the Army has met with a Polish delegation visiting South Korea to discuss ways to advance their ties following the European country's acquisition of South Korean arms systems, the armed service said Wednesday.

The meeting between Army Chief of Staff Gen. Kim Gyu-ha and Lt. Gen. Marek Sokolowski, general commander of the Polish Armed Forces, came as the South Korean Army invited the Polish delegation to the country for a five-day visit this week.

At the meeting, Kim and Sokolowski agreed to expand exchanges in areas of future warfare, such as artificial intelligence (AI) technology, drones and robots, while supporting maintenance, repair and operations (MRO) of South Korean arms systems exported to Poland, according to the Army.

As part of the visit, the Polish delegation toured the Army's logistics facilities and observed maintenance of South Korean weapons systems, such as the K2 battle tank and the K9 self-propelled howitzer.

Poland has clinched a series of defense deals with South Korea in recent years to acquire K2 battle tanks and K9 self-propelled howitzers, as well as the Chunmoo multiple rocket launcher system.
