Police raid Cheongju city councilor's offices over alleged sexual abuse of minor

CHEONGJU, South Korea, July 15 (Yonhap) -- Police said Wednesday they have raided the offices of a Cheongju city councilor suspected of sexually abusing a minor.

Investigators obtained relevant materials, including computers and digital storage devices, from two of the councilor's offices and residence in the central city of Cheongju, according to the local police.

The councilor's identity, including gender, was not immediately available.

The first-term councilor of the main opposition People Power Party is accused of having sexual relations with a middle school student in cars and motels on two to three occasions between October 2024 and May 2025, and filming the encounters, according to the police.

The city councilor allegedly met the student through a chatting app and demanded sex in exchange for money or cigarettes.

An investigation was launched in March after the victim's parents filed a report.

The police said they plan to call in the suspect for questioning upon completing an analysis of the seized materials.
