SEOUL, Sept. 10 (Yonhap) -- Seoul city plans to spend 86.1 trillion won (US$64.3 billion) in key projects to raise its competitiveness to that of a "global top three" city by 2030, Mayor Oh Se-hoon said Thursday.

Oh has pushed for elevating the city's global ranking following his victory in the June 3 local elections to secure his third consecutive term and fifth overall as Seoul mayor.

The city government's plan focuses on improving people's quality of life and adopting new technologies through 100 major initiatives, such as setting up exercise zones within 10 minutes from home.

The initiatives also include offering artificial intelligence service passes to 500,000 young people, and increasing the number of self-driving buses to 500 by 2030 from the current 16.

In the housing sector, the city seeks to begin construction of 310,000 housing units by 2031 through rapid integration planning and push for supplying 130,000 public housing units to address soaring real estate prices.

Seoul ranked sixth in the Japan-based Mori Memorial Foundation's Global Power City Index 2025. London topped the list followed by Tokyo, New York, Paris and Singapore.

The index evaluates cities based on six major indicators -- economy, research and development, cultural interaction, livability, environment and accessibility.
