S. Korea signs counterterrorism cooperation MOU with U.N. agency
SEOUL, July 3 (Yonhap) -- South Korea has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the U.N. Office of Counter-Terrorism to expand information sharing, personnel exchanges and joint research, the office for government policy coordination said Friday.
Park Won-ho, deputy chief of the government's counterterrorism center, signed the agreement with Alexandre Zouev, acting under-secretary-general of the U.N. office, during a meeting held Thursday (local time) on the sidelines of a U.N. high-level conference on counterterrorism in New York, the office said.
It is the first time the counterterrorism center has signed an MOU with an international agency.
The MOU, valid for five years and renewable upon agreement, calls for expanding the sharing of information and discussions to deal more effectively with terrorism; increasing personnel exchanges; exchanging research results and exemplary cases; and conducting joint research, the office said.
During the meeting held ahead of the signing, Park and Zouev shared an understanding that no place in the world is safe from terrorism and the two sides should actively cooperate in response to terror threats evolving with such advanced science and technologies as artificial intelligence and drones, the office said.
