Budget minister nominee apologizes for 'immature' remarks at confirmation hearing
By Kim Han-joo
SEOUL, Jan. 23 (Yonhap) -- Lee Hye-hoon, nominee for the head of the newly established Ministry of Planning and Budget, apologized Friday for what she described as her "immature" remarks.
Lee made the apology in her opening statement at a confirmation hearing held after weeks of partisan wrangling over allegations related to her conduct during her tenure as a lawmaker, including claims that she mistreated subordinates and an intern.
"I sincerely apologize to everyone who was hurt by my immature words," said Lee, a former three-term lawmaker from the conservative bloc.
The opposition bloc had urged Lee to give up her nomination, also citing suspicions related to her husband's real estate dealings, as well as her previous remarks in support of former President Yoon Suk Yeol's failed martial law bid.
"I once again apologize for standing on the side of a decision that deserves criticism," Lee said. "I will make no excuse."
Lee was tapped by President Lee Jae Myung to head the ministry, which was established under the prime minister's office as part of a government reorganization bill to take over the budget management role.
