YEONGWOL, July 6 (Yonhap) -- The Natural Monument Insect Research Center in Yeongwol-gun, Gangwon-do announced to have succeeded in filming the natural eclosion of the longhorned beetle, the nation's Natural Monument No. 218, which is the world's first discovery of the life cycle of an insect in an outdoor environment.

The center added that in the process, it filmed a scene of a long-horned beetle burrowing out of a tree after an eclosion.

According to the center, a total of six second-generation adults (4 males and 2 females) successfully eclosed between June 25 to July 4 this year. This is the first time in 4 years for the female beetle to spawn eggs since August 1, 2017.

Through this experiment, the center found out that the actual life cycle of the long-horned beetle is three to four years.

The longhorned beetle lays 50 to 80 eggs, and the larvae that wake up from the eggs instinctively dig into the tree and grow after eating the wood parts of the tree for four to five years.

In the natural state, the beetle appears from June to August, therefore the eclosion is expected to continue this year.

The center succeeded in artificial breeding of a long-horned beetle in 2012.
